CORE Scholar 1,000,000 Downloads Contest

Guess which day CORE Scholar will reach
1,000,000 downloads
and win a Starbucks gift card!

CORE Scholar, Wright State’s Institutional Repository, is about to hit 1 million downloads! Why is this significant? CORE Scholar collects and makes available the scholarship and cultural heritage of Wright State. That means WSU’s papers, poster, newsletters, photos, and so much more have been downloaded by 1 million people worldwide. Each download signifies another person becoming more familiar with the incredible work being done at Wright State University.

Check out this map of CORE Scholar downloads from all over the world:

We will give away $5.00 Starbucks gift cards to two contestants who guess, or get closest, to the day CORE Scholar reaches 1 million downloads.

To enter to win, contestants must retweet our contest tweet (@wsudigiserv) along with their guess of what day we will hit 1 million downloads.

If multiple contestants guess the same day, or, multiple contestants guess the closest day, winners will be chosen based on a random drawing of names.

Contestants must be affiliated with Wright State University, but not with the University Libraries (UL student workers are still eligible!). Winners must provide their mailing address.

GOOD LUCK!

About Maiden Flight

Katharine Wright made the decision to leave her home in Dayton, Ohio—and more importantly her world-famous and intensely possessive older brother, Orville—to marry Kansas City Star editor Henry J. Haskell (known as Harry), the man she loved and had known since her days at Oberlin College. Katharine—the “Wright sister” and the only Wright sibling with a college degree—was an international celebrity in her own right, embodying the worldly, independent, and self-fulfilled New Woman of the early 20th century. Her vibrant, outgoing personality made her an indispensable asset to her renowned yet socially shy brothers. Torn between duty and love, she agonized for months before making her devastating break with Orville. Even though she attempted to communicate with him, he refused to see her until she was on her deathbed three years later.

Maiden Flight (Academy Chicago, an imprint of Chicago Review Press; October 1, 2016) is the fictionalized telling of Katharine Wright and Henry J. Haskell’s love affair. Written by Haskell’s grandson and namesake, Harry Haskell, the novel is based on personal letters, newspaper reports, and other documents of the period—in particular, Katharine’s lively and extraordinarily revealing love letters to Harry. Cast in the form of three interwoven first-person “memoirs,” imaginatively reconstructed by the author, Maiden Flight allows Katharine to step outside of Wilbur and Orville’s shadow. Haskell sheds new light on the central role she played in their private lives, as well as on her often misunderstood contribution to her brothers’ scientific work.

A moving read for anyone interested in the Wrights or independent women of a bygone era, Maiden Flight celebrates Katharine’s abundant store of what she called “human nature”—her spirited and perceptive outlook on life, her great capacity for both love and indignation and her acute and sometimes crippling self-awareness.

About the Author:

Harry Haskell, the grandson of the former Kansas City Star editor Henry J. Haskell, was a writer and editor at the same paper and an editor at Yale University Press. He is the author of Boss-Busters and Sin Hounds: Kansas City and Its Star and The Early Music Revival: A History, and editor of The Attentive Listener: Three Centuries of Music Criticism. He lives in Guilford, Connecticut.

Please join us in the Student Union Endeavour Room on October 25th and get swept away by this historic love story!

Changes to Library Course Reserves

As part of our efforts to increase efficiency and eliminate duplication of services, the University Libraries will be changing our Course Reserves service. We plan to phase out our electronic-reserves service (ARES) by the end of this semester. Classes in Fall 2016 are still able to use this service, but not classes in Spring 2017 and beyond.

Service for hard-copy reserves will continue as usual. Furthermore, this change does not affect the electronic journal databases or Pilot.

For material that is currently on your e-reserves site, please contact us ([email protected]) if you know which files you would like us to download onto a Flash drive for you. Alternatively, you are always welcome to access your course site and download whatever files you wish to save.

Please link to library resources in Pilot whenever possible. This helps us keep track of which journals and other electronic resources are being accessed. Faculty, make sure your students can access Pilot materials off-campus – use the Permalink button available in every catalog record to generate EZProxy links!  Check out our “Linking to Library Resources in Pilot” page for useful tips: www.libraries.wright.edu/services/pilot.pdf.

Stay tuned for further updates and announcements concerning these changes to the Libraries’ Course Reserves service.

Faculty, staff, and instructors, we appreciate your understanding and look forward to continuing to work with you toward student success!
