Dr. Herbert Martin will present a dramatic presentation and discussion in honor of the 150th anniversary of Paul Laurence Dunbar’s birth.

Reflecting on his career, Dr. Martin writes of himself:

“Herbert Woodward Martin finds himself, a Librettist. Thrust into the foreground of a career that has witness the publication of eleven volumes of poetry, he suddenly realizes that his two Arias for Solo Voice has placed him in the forefront of writers engaged by composers. He has worked  with numerous composers and more recently with the American Composer Adolphus Hailstork.

Without realizing it, he has been the literary voice for an opera using Paul Laurence Dunbar’s poems titled: Paul Laurence Dunbar: Common Ground, followed by The Cantata: Crispus Attucks, Zora for Narrator and Orchestra, and more recently Nobody Know for Baritone and Orchestra, Tulsa 1921 for Mezzo-soprano. March will be witness to the World Premiere of A Knee On The Neck a new requiem based on the death of George Floyd.

He won First Prize for The Log of The Vigilante. This is his Slave Narrative book. His most recent volumes of poetry are The Shape of Regret (Wayne State University Press) and Sometimes Say My Name which won the Publication Prize from The William Meredith Foundation for 2021.

He is The Paul Laurence Dunbar Poet Laureate for Dayton Ohio.”
