St Patrick’s Day

St Patrick’s Day is celebrated each year on March 17th. The celebration was originally a religious festival to commemorate St Patrick, who is the Catholic patron saint of Ireland. Today, the holiday is associated less with its religious origins but more as a time to celebrate all things related to Irish culture.

The DDN Collection contains both information on local celebrations in the Miami Valley and photos from Ireland itself. In the 1960s the paper employed a number of foreign correspondents who did a few stories on Ireland, the archive is luckily enough to still have these pictures in the collection. There are also numerous AP photos on Ireland that were run in the paper.

In honor of St. Patrick’s Day, please enjoy the photos below that chronicle the celebration from Kettering to Killarney.
