William Writes After the Battle of Shiloh

On April 10, 1862, William Patterson wrote his mother to report that he was “in the land of the living” after the Battle of Shiloh.  In his short letter he reports that “dead and wounded are all over a field of more than 12 miles [square] and you could not walk more than ten [paces] without tramping on them.” (Transcript of William Letter, April 10, 1862)
