On January 13, Dawne Dewey, Head of the Special Collections & Archives, made a one-day trip to the Washington, D.C., area to participate in a panel at the AIAA’s SciTech 2014 conference, which focuses on aerospace research, development, and technology.
The session, chaired by Cam Martin of the NASA-Dryden Flight Research Center, was entitled “Aerospace Archives: All is NOT Lost – Keepers of the Right Stuff.” The conference program (pdf) gave the following description:
The AIAA History Technical Committee works to highlight the record of aerospace advances and recognize their impacts on modern society.
To help dispel the myth that all the legacy materials of people and institutions have been lost, this session will provide a basic overview of what exists, where it is, and how it may be accessed.
During this panel discussion, experts will talk about “best practices” and the individual and institutional responsibilities for preserving records.
In addition to Dawne, the other panelists in the session were: Dr. Deborah Douglas, Curator of Science & Technology, MIT; Ms. Marilyn Graskowiak, Archivist, National Air & Space Museum; Elizabeth Borja, Reference Archivist, National Air & Space Museum; and Ms. Jane Odom, Chief Archivist, NASA.
About 40 people attended the session.
