Huffman Prairie Aviation Historical Society Meeting, September 10

The next meeting of the Huffman Prairie Aviation Historical Society will take place on Monday, September 10, at 7:00pm. All are welcome!

Geoff Hays will present “The History and Colors of the B-17D: The Swoose”

About the authors: Geoff Hays is a retired US Air Force Officer who served over 28 years on active duty and in the USAF Reserve. He was a Photo Interpretation and Target Intelligence Officer and a Titan II ICBM Combat Crew Commander and Instructor. His civilian career spanned 18 years with the USAF Museum at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH, as a Division Chief and staff historian. He completed his civilian service with the National Air Intelligence Center and the Defense Intelligence Agency, retiring in 2003.

Two other historians had a major role in preparing this presentation, but cannot join us tonight. The first is the late Wayne Moyer, a career Aeronautical Engineer at Wright-Patterson AFB from 1964 through the mid 1990s. Wayne had a role in the development of every major USAF aircraft that came into the Air Force during his career, culminating as being the senior engineer in the development on the USAF’s Advanced Tactical Fighter program, which led to Request for Proposals and competition between the Lockheed-Martin F-22 and the Northrop F-23. Wayne passed away on Easter Sunday this year.

The second individual is retired USAF Master Sergeant Mark Young who had a distinguished career in the Strategic Air Command both here at Wright-Patterson in the 17th Bombardment Wing and at Andrews AFB as a Senior Crew Chief during the introduction into service of the Boeing 747-based E-4 National Emergency Airborne Command Post. Mark is a world renowned scale aircraft modeler with models on display at the Pentagon, the National Air and Space Museum, and the National Museum of the United States Air Force.

The program will be held at the Huffman Prairie Flying Field Interpretive Center, Dayton Aviation Heritage National Historical Park, 2380 Memorial Road (intersection of State Route 444 and Kauffman Road), Wright-Patterson Air Force Base.
