Celebrate National Friends of the Libraries Week, October 20 – 26, 2024

National FOL Week Banner

Since 2005, the American Library Association has promoted National Friends of the Libraries Week during the third week of October as a time to recognize the dedication of Friends groups across the nation.

The Wright State University Friends of the Libraries were established in 1978 and is a group of Wright State faculty, staff, retirees, alumni, and community members who are committed to supporting the unique needs of the Wright State University Libraries and its patrons.

A few of the ways they support the mission of the WSU Libraries to provide quality research services, materials, and library spaces for students, faculty, staff, and the Miami Valley community are:

  • The Friends support the library staff grants for research projects, new equipment and technology, staff development, and other special projects.
  • In collaboration with the Wright State University Retirees’ Association and the Wright State University Alumni Association they host a book club discussion on select evenings at 5:30 p.m. via WebEx.
  • In April they host an annual meeting and luncheon. The April 2024 annual luncheon featured keynote speaker, Vick Mickunas, author interviewer and WYSO Public Radio’s “The Book Nook” creator, who shared, Authors I Have Known.
  • Twice per year they award $500 scholarships to library student assistants in recognition of their outstanding job performance and contributions to the work of the Libraries.
  • Annually in April, the Friends of the Libraries honor the “Top Scholars” selected by the Dean’s Office in each college and the Lake Campus.
  • And more…

In celebration of National Friends of the Libraries Week, this week only the Friends are offering $10.00 off all membership levels – discount offer expires October 26. If you’re not already a member, or if you’ve been meaning to renew your membership, take advantage of this savings and join or renew today. We can’t think of a better way to celebrate National Friends of the Libraries Week than welcoming you to our membership!

Jane Wildermuth appointed university librarian

We are pleased to announce Jane Wildermuth has been appointed university librarian for the Wright State University Libraries.

Jane has been a member of the University Libraries staff for 25 years, joining the Special Collections and Archives department as an archivist in 1999. In 2006 she created the Digital Services department and served as the department head until 2020 when she was appointed as the head of the Special Collections and Archives.

Throughout her tenure at Wright State, Jane has been active in the library and archives communities through OhioLINK, the Society of Ohio Archivists, and the Academic Library Association of Ohio. In 2019 she received the TEDDY Award from ALAO’s Technical Electronic and Digital Services Interest Group for her distinguished service.

As the university librarian, Jane will be undertaking several exciting projects including renovations in Special Collections and Archives and the first floor of the Dunbar Library. In addition, she will work with library staff to develop plans to transform the Dunbar Library, centering on student activities and success.

Crafternoons at the Library!

This semester, the library is offering three Crafternoon sessions. Come take an afternoon break and enjoy an hour of creative crafting.

In October we’ll decorate creepy cupcakes. In November we’ll cut and rip paper to make collages. And in December, we’ll kick off winter with an afternoon of knitting.

Crafternoons are open to all Wright State University students and supplies will be provided. Registration is required as space is limited. Many thanks to our sponsor, the Friends of the Libraries.

See you there!

Campus History Walk

Did you know that WSU was once a branch campus of Miami University and the Ohio State University? Did you know there is a small 19th century cemetery bordering the woods on the east side of campus? Are you interested in learning more about the history and early beginnings of WSU? If so, please join University Archivist Chris Wydman for a short historical walking tour of the WSU campus, beginning at the Dunbar Library, followed by a tour through the Quad, then down the hill to the historic Rockafield Cemetery. Please join us Tuesday, October 8 at 1pm in the library lobby, with a rainout date of October 17. Please dress appropriately for October weather and remember your hiking shoes. We hope to see you on the 8th!
